Cognition and Behavior in Motor Neuron Disease

Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are collectively known as motor neuron disease (MND). Depending on the clinical involvement of the lower or upper motor neuron (LMN, UMN) a diagnosis of PMA (LMN only) or ALS (LMN and UMN) will be reached.1 Ninety percent of MND patients are sporadic cases and 10% are familial, often with an autosomal dominant inheritance.
