Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The stage at which cancer is discovered is critical for the treatment choice and overall survival of patients. Unfortunately, due to the asymptomatic nature of early-stage cancer, a lot of cancers are detected when the disease has locally spread or metastasized to other organs. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of cancer development and progression may offer clues and elements that can be used as early biomarker and/or therapeutic targets of cancer. Recent studies demonstrate an essential role of platelets in tumor angiogenesis and cancer progression. The increasing interest in the effect of platelets on malignancies could lead to novel strategies in cancer treatment. However, studies exploring the influence of malignant tumors on platelets and their potential use as biomarkers of cancer are still scarce. The main goals of this thesis were 1) to study the relation between platelet characteristics and cancer progression in patients, 2) to investigate whether (a combination of) changes in platelet characteristics in patients can be used as biomarkers of cancer and 3) to explore whether anti-cancer drug can affect platelet function of patients with cancer.
